About Mapping Fairfax
Locating racially restrictive covenants on land records for Fairfax County relied heavily on the knowledge and expertise of archivists at the Fairfax County Courthouse who made this work possible. We began by generating a list of possible subdivisions and estates for the Study Period (1900-1968) from several publicly available sources.
- Using information received from County archivists to supplement the limited searchable features of CPAN, numerous types of land records, including deeds of dedication and bargain & sale deeds, were reviewed for racial restrictions.
- From this process, the list of County subdivisions and estates for which we located one or more racially restrictive covenants, was updated (see list below).
- The regional map uses current public polygon and address data from Fairfax County’s Real Estate Assessment Map and the City of Fairfax’s Interactive Mapper.
This map is a work in progress. For some of the subdivisions listed below, racial covenants were found in the deed of dedication covering all lots outlined in the subdivision’s plat map. For other parcels, covenants were found in bargain and sale deeds for individual lots, which could have been a part of an estate or farm.
As parcels are located, additional covenanted lots will be added to the map. Please check our website for any updates.
